It is important that whenever you spend any amount of time outside that you check for ticks afterward. Ticks are found everywhere that animals may roam, and that includes lawns, woods, prairies and perhaps even Ballfield Farm! Not all ticks carry diseases, and just because you find a tick on you does it mean you'll get Lyme Disease, but many do, and the amount of Lyme Disease cases continue to rise in our region. We have had numerous Ballfield Farm members contract it in recent years. It is a miserable disease, and if left untreated, can have long-term debilitating effects. Some tips: wear pants, apply appropriate bug repellent, check and wash yourself and loved ones after time spent outside. Here is a helpful chart to identify ticks. Deer ticks are carriers of Lyme disease, and unfortunately, the smallest type of tick. Here is good fact sheet on ticks and Lyme Disease in Pennsylvania. Please do not let ticks keep you from enjoying the outdoors, but please do be aware that ticks are common in our area and it is important to remain aware of your surroundings.
